Aimilios Michael, Architect Engineer Dipl.Arch.Eng., M.Sc., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the Department of Architecture of the University of Cyprus, Director of the Energy & Environmental Design of Buildings Research Laboratory (E&EDB) and Member of the Steering Committee for the Inter-departmental Master Programme “Energy Technology and Sustainable Design” and Member of the Board of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cyprus. Between 2006 and 2017, before assuming his current position, he was Assistant Professor, Lecturer, Visiting Lecturer and Senior Research Associate at the Department of Architecture in the University of Cyprus. During the Spring Semester of 2020, he was Visiting Faculty Member at the School of Engineering and Design of the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
Aimilios holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Design and Energy in Architecture from the Department of Architectural Technology, School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). During his studies, he was awarded numerous academic performance distinctions, including the Academic Excellence NTUA Award 2004, the NTUA Silver Medal 2004 (1st rank), the Best Design Diploma Thesis NTUA Award 2004 and was nominated for the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award NTUA 2011. He was also awarded numerous academic scholarships for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies, including the Academic Excellence Annual Scholarships from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation from 1999 until 2004, the Eugenides Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship 2005-2006, the Doctoral Studies Scholarship in Architecture and Environment from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation 2005-2009 and the Doctoral Studies Scholarship from the Cyprus State Scholarships Foundation 2006-2010.
His research activities take on an interdisciplinary perspective and they focus on the areas of Energy and Environmental Design of Buildings and Advanced Architectural Technology. His research priorities include Integrated Architectural Design, Construction Technology and Sustainability, Energy and Environmental Design of Buildings, Bioclimatic and Energy Conservation of Vernacular and Modern-Movement Architecture in Cyprus and Innovative Sustainable Construction Components and Materials. He participated as principal investigator and/or project coordinator in 18 research programmes funded by the European Commission, 7th Framework Programme (FP7), the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the Erasmus+ Programme, the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), the University of Cyprus and the private sector, securing a total funding for UCy - E&EDB Research Lab of more than 1.8 million Euro.
His design-based research has been awarded 16 times in architectural European and international competitions, including two 1st prizes, and has been presented in 30 national and international exhibitions and architectural fora, including the 22nd Biennial of Industrial Design and the 12th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. His research work has been widely published in 35 refereed scientific journals (receiving the ‘Frontiers of Architectural Research’ Best Journal Paper Award in 2021), in 10 special issues and in 82 peer-reviewed international conference proceedings. He has an active community service as a reviewer of international scientific journals and as a member of international scientific and/or organizing committees and professional boards.
Currently, Aimilios is Member of the Administrative Council of the Cyprus Scientific Technical Chamber (ETEK) (2011, 2013, 2017 and 2021 - today). He was Member of the Board of Directors of Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) (08.2021 - 02.2024). From 2017 to 2021 he held the position of the Vice-President of the Council for Planning Derogation Applications by a Ministerial Council Appointment and from 2012 to 2017 he served as the Vice-President of the Cyprus Architects Association (CAA) and as CAA Representative to the International Union of Architects (UIA). From 2013 to 2017 he served as Member of the Administrative Council of the Cyprus Civil Engineers and Architects Association (CCEAA). From the positions he held, Aimilios participated in several scientific and professional committees, including the State Architecture Policy Committee as a Chair, the Energy Policy Committee as a Deputy Chair and the Environment and Sustainable Development Committee as a Member.
